Last summer I made a decision to invest in my first sewing machine. Based on both advice and finances I settled on the Toyota SP100 series Model SPB15 which I purchased in Argos.
Initially my purchase was based on the fact that I had two young daughters and I wanted them to learn how to use a machine without fear or trepidation. I need not have worried. They took to it like a pair of ducklings. The only issue was me!! I had no clue how to teach them so I decided I myself needed to do a course.
With a bit of online research, I decided on an evening course at Ashton School, Blackrock, Cork. The classes are of a 2 hour duration and are a mixed class, with mainly beginners, but everyone is welcome. Deirdre, the tutor, is really lovely, with great patience.
After a few lessons I felt comfortable enough to bring my own machine but it is not a requirement. The textiles room is very well equipped with both Singer & Husqvarna machines.
What I did discover though was my needle plate had no gauge for seam allowances. It didn’t prove an issue though, as I went onto the Toyota website and purchased the plate, spare bobbins and a sturdy bag to carry my machine ( a necessity in the Irish winter for those wet Monday!!)
The first term I chose a shift dress with a pattern from New Look as pictured above. It proved challenging at times but I successfully completed it and wore it on Christmas day 🙂
I completed my first sewing term happy in the knowledge that I could sew. I ENJOYED IT!! What’s more I could now teach my own 2 little ladies how to do more than sew a straight seam!!
Til next time

Well done, I too have never ventured into the sewing world, but I have a very healthy admiration and awe for anyone who does, many years of enjoyment I wish you, take care x

Thanks a million Fiona. All the lovely comments & support are really appreciated 🙂
Thanks for this Mairead, I bought a machine for my daughter for her 8th birthday and have been trying to find a suitable class for me since! May try Asthon after your recommendation! Olga
Thats great Olga. Delighted you enjoyed. Ashton courses run in school terms, so we are in the second term now. Could not recommend it enough. Thanks for the feedback.
