Well folks,
Since I last wrote about my sewing I have been very busy at my machine. My only difficulty is finding a time slot when my two girls aren’t fighting over whose turn it is next!!
My sewing class is gaining momentum and I am currently making a dress for my 12 year old. We paid a visit to Hickeys In the Savoy Centre, Cork where I let her loose with a few pattern books. This is the pattern she chose.
Admittedly I took a deep breath & said “Seriously?” 🙂 Her confidence in me was inspiring so I made my purchase. The next step was the fabric selection. I wanted cotton but as it was my first time attempting anything like this, I headed for a shop in Cork called Guineys, where you can buy ANYTHING!!! At an extremely reasonable cost we purchased a purple style gingham with embroidered daisies, a really pretty & sweet fabric.
As an added bonus I got very generous measurements & made a skirt for my 9 year old out of the remaining fabric.
The Simplicity dress pattern has been a challenging but extremely fulfilling exercise. There are a variety of options available for you to choose from. We went for the sleeveless option with the love heart back. The dress has pockets but I left them out…does a 12 year old REALLY need pockets in a dress!!! Ok I admit the back was going to prove enough of a challenge with the added stress of pockets 🙂
I have been assisted every step of the way in this project by Deirdre, my teacher at Ashton School. I have & am always learning numerous skills on pleating, trimming, smooth lines etc.
The dress is near completion with a zip to put in, a few buttonholes to insert & then the inevitable argument over the length 😉
It has turned out beautiful so far & I must say I’m feeling very proud of it.
So my class continues tonight & hopefully the zip will be in situ by 9.30pm!!!!!!!
Will keep ye posted.
Til next time.
