[ My Review ]
Go Seek by Michelle Teahan published July 6th with Headline and is described as ‘exhilarating and breathless, with an emotional core…a non-stop high-octane thriller‘. It is very hard to believe that this is a debut. It’s an absolute cracker of a read folks!
Maeve lives in Kent with her husband, Christopher, and her two small children, Abbie and Sarah. A suburban mother, Maeve is under a self-imposed pressure to be the perfect mother, the perfect wife. She finds it difficult to keep up with the local mums who appear to sail through motherhood unphased and on one particular morning her stress levels are high. Christopher is away for work and Maeve needs to be at the medical centre for a check up for baby Sarah. She is addled but eventually makes it there on time. Following the appointment, Maeve is relieved to be back to her car but, in a very unexpected turn-of-events, Sarah goes missing. Maeve is distraught and angry, but a strange calmness envelops her as she knows who has her baby.
Maeve spins a yarn to Christopher about an unwell relative and takes an urgent flight to Cork, the place she once called home. What happens next is a spiralling trip into the depths of gangland crime. Maeve had a past that she had turned her back on, one she had needed to escape for her sanity. Now Maeve feels the tentacles reaching out, only too aware that every second she wastes puts her child at risk.
Michelle Teahan takes the reader on a shocking, exciting, breathless journey into the dangerous world of organised crime and the hierarchies that exist within its structure. Maeve is a brilliantly cast protagonist. Her story will leave you truly gobsmacked. Michelle Teahan excellently builds up the intensity and the suspense, throwing the occasional firecracker into the mix to really get the heart pumping.
An unbelievable debut, Go Seek is set primarily between Cork and Dublin. For anyone who, like me, loved The Glorious Heresies by Lisa McInerney then Go Seek will be right up your street. Realistic and frightening, a missing child is the stuff of nightmares for any parent, but for someone like Maeve, it’s on a whole new petrifying level.
Michelle Teahan has done an incredible job in injecting a fresh take on the baby/child kidnapping plot. The atmosphere is charged all the way through adding a heightened sense of urgency that never, ever lets up. A really phenomenal debut, Go Seek is gritty, addictive and heart-pounding. It’s a stay-up-all-night one-sitting kind of read that you will just not be able to put down. Huge congratulations to Michelle Teahan. I have absolutely no idea where she can go after this stupendous first novel but I do know that I am a confirmed fan and am looking forward to more incredible reads from her.
