[ My Review ]
The Last Devil to Die by Richard Osman publishes September 14th with Viking and is the highly anticipated fourth novel in The Thursday Murder Club series. A series that has reached international acclaim, publishing in over 43 countries around the world, it is described by Val McDermid as ‘warm, wise and witty’. I think we are all looking forward to the movie, after the film rights were picked up by Stephen Spielberg!
I read The Thursday Murder Club and really enjoyed the cosy element of the novel, with its whodunnit plot and, of course, its aging protagonists so I was only too delighted to be reacquainted with the gang. The Last Devil to Die opens up with a shocking murder two days after Christmas. An antiques dealer, Kuldesh Sharma, has been killed and a package that was in his possession is missing. Kuldesh is an old friend of Stephen so when the news arrives at Cooper’s Chase of his untimely and brutal murder, Elizabeth and the rest of The Thursday Murder Club team are immediately on the case.
The arrival of the National Crime Agency on the scene causes some disruption in the local police station with Donna and Chris side-lined and told to stay away from the investigation. Donna and Chris are not too pleased, as this is their territory, and decide to discreetly do their own bit of research to uncover the truth behind this mysterious murder of a seemingly innocent man.
Joyce, Elizabeth, Ibrahim, Ron, with the assistance of a few others along the way, establish their own incident room of sorts, gathering information as they go. Kuldesh Sharma’s body was discovered in his car not far from Cooper’s Chase days following his murder. With very little evidence to go on, the gang slowly picks up loose threads and eventually begins to form a theory about what really happened. Using unorthodox methods, this geriatric sleuth club use their age to their advantage, gaining access to places, people, and information that the police are just incapable of digging up. One of the things that I love about this crew is their lack of fear, their ballsy attitude, and their can-do approach. Death comes to everyone, and this crew have made an active decision to live out their final years with spunk, grit, and a devil-may-care attitude. They all have a past. They all have secrets, especially Elizabeth. They are an unlikely friendship that works, as they each provide the space necessary to deal with the adversity of aging and to just be there in an unobtrusive manner when required.
The Last Devil to Die is a charming murder mystery. It does delve into the darker side of life but Richard Osman has a light hand that brings humour, compassion and warmth into every situation and piece of dialogue.
Entertaining, poignant and full of warmth The Last Devil to Die is another sure fire bestseller for this writer who has captured the hearts of many, a writer who has brought the cosy murder mystery back into the hands of the reader. A delightful read.
