‘He set her up. They’ll bring him down.’
Emily Charlton is back in The Wives, the latest novel from author of The Devil Wears Prada, Lauren Weisberger.
Just published with Harper Collins (and published in the USA by Simon & Schuster as When Life Gives You Lululemons) The Wives is described as a story that ‘dips into the irresistible cocktail of sex, lies and scandal’ and I have to say it really is the perfect Summer read with MANY laugh out loud, and soooo many OTT, moments!!
I was delighted to receive my copy from Harper Collins Ireland and today I have my first review after disappearing off the radar for a couple of weeks. I was on a much needed break with my family on the spectacular shores of Lake Garda in Italy. As an aside can I just say Lake Garda should be on everyone’s bucket list. Highly recommended by me and mine 🙂
Now back to business……my as ever unbiased and voluntary review..
About The Book:
Emily Charlton does not do the suburbs. A successful stylist and image consultant to Hollywood stars, she cut her teeth as assistant to legendary fashion editor Miranda Priestly in New York. But with Snapchatting millennials stealing her clients, Emily needs to get back in the game and fast.
She holes up at the home of her oldest friend Miriam in the upscale suburb of Greenwich. And when Miriam’s friend, model Karolina Hartwell, is publicly dumped by her husband Graham, a senator with presidential ambitions, Emily scents the client of a lifetime.
It’s not just Karolina’s reputation that’s ruined. It’s her family. And Miriam and Emily are determined he won’t get away with it. First they’ll get Karolina’s son back. Then they’ll help her get her own back. Because the wives are mad as hell . . .
My Review:
The Wives is really a must-read for all fans of The Devil Wears Prada, a movie that is so synonymous with Meryl Streep and her performance as the boss from hell, Miranda Priestley. Emily Charlton, ex assistant of Miranda Priestley at Runway magazine, is now a successful stylist and image consultant to the Hollywood elite. Well….was successful! Emily is in trouble. With new kids on the block and the power of social media at their disposal, Emily finds herself in a place that does not impress her one bit. She is losing clients to these young upstarts and Emily’s career is in jeopardy. After losing yet another top client in New York, Emily, on impulse, heads to the burbs to visit her best friend Miriam.
The Wives is a novel that focuses on three main characters – Emily, Miriam and Karolina, all so very different but all so perfectly matched. A unique friendship develops between them as they go on this wild and laugh-out-loud funny adventure in a world that is quite frankly…mad!!
Emily we are very familiar with so who are Miriam and Karolina?
Miriam is Emily’s best buddy, someone who totally gets her and sees through all the bluff and bull. Miriam is an ex-Manhattan lawyer who decides to trade in her Manolos for life in Greenwich with her now extremely wealthy husband and her twins. Miriam thought this life in the suburbs would be beneficial for the whole family but as it turns out life among the stay-at-home moms is quite challenging. Miriam has put on weight, her hair is a mess, her clothes scream Mom and she just keeps getting things wrong!! Emily arriving on her doorstep is just what she needs to liven things up a little.
Meanwhile Karolina, ex Supermodel and one of the ‘chosen’ Victoria’s Secret Angels is in trouble. After been stopped by the local police, she is arrested on what appears to be a trumped up DUI. Married to a newly elected senator with his sights on the White House, this is bad publicity for Karolina and things are about to get worse……
Lauren Weisberger has captured the insanity of the lifestyle of the super rich in The Wives. From the ‘sip and see’ baby parties to the red-carpet fake paparazzi birthday parties for five year olds, it really is a case of money being no object. One of the many aspects I enjoyed was the chapter titles. With headings like ‘The Suburbs Make You Fat’, ‘Vodka and Tampax: A Match Made in Greenwich’ (seriously do people do that??????), ‘Munching Xanax Like Gumballs’ and there are plenty more!!
The Wives is a totally chaotic read, as we watch the three women form a wonderful bond, each with completely different personalities, yet each seeming to understand each other completely. They make a great team with their hilarious chatter and ability to see the brighter side of life.
Emily Charlton does what many of us just cannot do…she is NOT afraid to say the truth and she has absolutely no compulsions in bringing anyone down. She is basically a bitch with a fantastic attitude that I found such fun. If I were a celeb (ahem :)) and got into any difficulties in my life, Emily Charlton would be great to have on speed dial. No messing with this one!!
The Wives is a fun read, with pure entertainment from the opening chapter. Full of sharp comments and witty observations, with hilarious scenes depicted, The Wives, in my humble opinion is a Netflix series in the making.
Glamorous. Scandalous. Fun.
